Harry Hay, Vincente Minnelli, Rudi Gernreich and gay Liberation–this heady mix of characters and history make for excellent theater in the return engagement of Jon Maran’s The Tempermentals. It’s theater for smart people; Maran’s tale of The Mattachine Society, argurably the first organization to fight for gay rights in the US, builds movingly to its climax via a timely subject (this is the world those Prop 8 monsters want gays to return to), facile staging and an ensemble of glorious actors. Arnie Burton, fresh from his dazzling performance in The 39th Steps, joins the cast this time around; previews start on February 18 and the price is $19.52 until February 28. A steal for what you get–go, and see what quality theater is all about.
